The Best Mowing Height for South Florida Lawns

One of the most common lawn care mistakes homeowners make is mowing too short. Cutting grass below its optimal height stresses the plant, exposes soil to weed seeds, and reduces drought tolerance — all of which matter even more in South Florida's heat.
St. Augustine grass, the most common lawn type in South Florida, should generally be mowed between 3.5 and 4 inches. Zoysia does best between 2 and 2.5 inches, while Bahia grass tolerates a range of 3 to 4 inches.
The general rule is to never remove more than one-third of the blade length in a single mow. If your lawn gets away from you, raise the mower height and bring it down gradually over two or three visits rather than scalping it back in one pass.
A consistent, correctly-timed mowing schedule — which is exactly what our weekly maintenance program provides — is one of the simplest ways to keep turf healthy without extra fertilizer or water.
